Barcelona Metro achieves its best June ever with more than 42 million passengers
Barcelona Metro has once again broken a passenger record. Last June, the network exceeded 42 million passengers, almost 8% more than in the same month of the previous year, consolidating the growth of public transport in the city and recording the best-ever figure for this period.
The provisional data published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that demand continues to rise after several consecutive months of record figures. The increase coincides with greater use of public transport for daily journeys and with the rise in visitors at the start of the tourist season.
The metro’s strong performance contrasts with other means of transport that have shown more moderate progress. The Barcelona network thus maintains a sustained growth trend that had already become apparent during the first months of the year, when historic passenger highs were also reached.
The increase in users once again puts the spotlight on the network’s capacity to absorb ever-growing demand. In recent years, TMB has increased frequencies, added new trains and improved accessibility at various stations in response to the steady rise in passengers.
The metro has become the main mobility alternative for millions of journeys within Barcelona. Its role is particularly important during the summer months, when works on some lines, increased tourism and high temperatures require the service to adapt in order to maintain the network’s smooth operation.
These figures confirm that public transport continues to gain prominence in metropolitan mobility. The metro’s continued growth reflects a change in habits among residents and visitors, who increasingly turn to the underground to get around quickly and avoid congested surface traffic.
