Barcelona metro restores the original pinnacles of Liceu station for its centenary

Coinciding with the centenary of its inauguration, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has reinstalled the original pinnacles at Liceu station, restoring to La Rambla the silhouette it had in 1925.

The four elements, made of wrought iron and cast iron, had disappeared after a renovation in 2007 and had been kept in the warehouses of the Fundació TMB. Their restoration required a meticulous process of laser cleaning, anti-corrosion treatments, and the reconstruction of the railings and pilasters that support them.

The project also included reproducing the metal signs marking the entrances with the original names "Liceu" and "Gran Metro", a name that refers to the early years of the underground network.

"We want the metro to celebrate its centenary by showing respect for its memory and for the city," said the president of TMB, Laia Bonet. With nearly 1.6 million journeys a day, the return of the pinnacles makes the station a visible symbol of how Barcelona cares for its past while moving towards the future.
