Madrid Metro will allow payment by bank card and mobile from June across the entire network
Entering the Madrid Metro will change completely from June. Passengers will be able to enter directly with their bank card or mobile phone, without having to buy or top up tickets, in a transformation that affects the daily routine of millions of people.
The rollout will be gradual and will reach all 303 stations in the network. Around 900 smart gates will allow access to be validated with contactless cards such as Visa, Mastercard or American Express, as well as compatible mobile devices. The measure, announced by councillor Jorge Rodrigo, is intended to speed up entry and reduce queues at peak times.
One of the key changes will be the introduction of the MT (Mobility and Transport Transactional) system, which automatically calculates the most advantageous fare according to actual use. Instead of paying for each journey separately, charges will be grouped together and the system will apply the best possible price for the user.The digitalisation will coexist with traditional methods. The Tarjeta de Transporte Público and tickets from the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid will remain active, ensuring that no one is excluded from the system.
The progress is financed with European funds from the Mecanismo de Recuperación and adds to other recent steps, such as the option of carrying a season ticket on a mobile phone. In addition, card payment already works on intercity buses, which reinforces the integration of the system.
With this update, the Metro de Madrid moves closer to models used in major European capitals. Greater speed, less friction and optimised fares: technology is redefining how the city moves, adapting public transport to an increasingly digital pace.
