Metro outlines its next major expansion: L10 to Móstoles, L11 through Leganés and L1 to Las Tablas

The largest project announced is the extension of Line 10 from Puerta del Sur, in Alcorcón, towards Móstoles. The new section will be around 6.5 kilometres long and have at least six stations, although the location of each one has not yet been specified. The initial estimated investment amounts to €1.05 billion.

The timetable makes it clear that this is not an immediate project. The regional government plans to devote the coming years to studies and designs, between 2027 and 2029, and places construction between 2030 and 2034. The future L10 would thus give Móstoles a second Metro connection to Madrid, different from the current MetroSur Line 12, which already runs through the municipality.

Leganés also features in the new plans, although at an even more preliminary stage. The Directorate-General for Infrastructure will study the extension of Line 11 from its current terminus at La Fortuna to Poza del Agua. The work beginning this September consists of technical studies, not construction on the ground.

The proposal also represents a change from the route that for years had envisaged linking La Fortuna with Cuatro Vientos. That route met objections from the Ministry of Defence because of its proximity to the air base, and the regional government is now exploring a solution that takes the L11 towards the interior of Leganés.

In northern Madrid, Line 1 will also extend towards Las Tablas. The announcement includes approximately 1.5 kilometres of tunnel and up to two new stations, with an estimated investment of €150 million. Studies and project drafting are scheduled for between 2027 and 2028 and the works, if the planned timetable progresses, for between 2030 and 2032.

This extension is in addition to the already defined project to take the L1 through Madrid Nuevo Norte. In July, the regional government confirmed an unprecedented configuration with two termini: trains will retain the current branch towards Pinar de Chamartín and have another towards Fuencarral Norte, passing through the future Centro de Negocios and Fuencarral Sur stations.

There will also be changes outside the conventional Metro. The ML3 Metro Ligero will be extended 1.5 kilometres towards Valenoso, in Boadilla del Monte, with two new surface stops and a new terminus. The infrastructure is budgeted at around €25 million, although the conditions of the current concession will first need to be amended.

None of these extensions will change daily travel in the short term. The immediate impact lies in the start of the studies and in the definition of a network that, over the next decade, aims to add new direct connections between Madrid and municipalities that already have Metro but currently depend on other lines and interchanges.
