Madrid Metro fills with World Cup atmosphere with a special national-team train
Getting around Madrid by Metro will have a much more football-oriented feel over the coming weeks. Line 4 already has a train entirely decorated with images of the Spanish national team, an initiative seeking to bring the atmosphere of the 2026 World Cup into the city's daily life and make routine journeys feel more like a pre-match build-up.
The train, wrapped in red and featuring visual references to the national team, will run throughout the World Cup competition. The idea is to use one of Madrid's busiest spaces to keep the tournament present while thousands of people travel to work, classes or across the city from one end to the other.
The choice of Line 4 is no coincidence. It connects directly with the Colón area, where a large Fan Zone will be set up to watch matches on a giant screen. During key fixtures, the area could become one of the liveliest spots in the capital, especially if Spain progresses in the tournament.
As well as the themed train, Metro de Madrid will also capitalise on football fever with a special collection of shirts inspired by World Cup-winning national teams and some of the underground's most recognisable lines. The tributes include Maradona's Argentina, Romário's Brazil and Spain, champions in 2010.
The shirts will be available at stations such as Sol, Ópera and Plaza de Castilla, spaces that increasingly serve as points of urban experience as well as simple transport hubs.
In recent years, the Metro has increasingly reinforced the idea of becoming a reflection of Madrid's cultural and social pulse. Exhibitions, concerts, visual campaigns and sporting events are now a regular part of stations and trains, especially when the city is experiencing major collective occasions.
The World Cup also arrives at a time when football is once again taking up a great deal of space in Madrid's daily conversation. Between terraces, giant screens and impromptu gatherings to watch matches, the city is gradually beginning to enter that shared atmosphere that only major international tournaments create.
