Museu Tàpies will close from 29 September for refurbishment
Museu Tàpies will close to the public from 29 September for approximately three months. The pause will require visits and activities to be reorganised in the heart of Eixample, although the museum will keep part of its programme in other Barcelona spaces.
The works will focus on refurbishing reception areas, improving accessibility and adapting the building to sustainability criteria. The intervention aims to make entry, movement around the building and visitors' stays more comfortable at one of the city's leading contemporary-art centres.
Those wishing to tour the museum before it closes will be able to do so until 27 September. That will also be the last day to visit the exhibitions ‘Antoni Tàpies. El moviment perpetu del mur’ and ‘Àngel Jové. De Intactu’, both extended until the end of the season.
The exhibition programme planned for the final months of the year will be postponed and resumed in 2027. The closure will therefore affect the museum's usual calendar, although it will not mean a complete interruption of its cultural and educational activity.
During the works, the education team will organise urban tours to discover Tàpies's presence in public space. It will also take proposals to schools, libraries and hospitals, extending activity beyond its premises on Carrer Aragó.
A new edition of the Concurs Teresa Barba for critical writing will also open in September. The initiative will make it possible to maintain contact with students, readers and audiences connected with reflection on art while the building remains closed.
Since 1990, the museum has occupied a Modernista building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Its location, near Passeig de Gràcia, makes it a regular stop for both residents and visitors exploring the cultural offering of central Barcelona.
The closure leaves three months without access to one of Eixample's most recognisable collections, but also a programme spread around the city. The reopening will show to what extent the works manage to modernise the museum without altering the industrial and Modernista character of its historic headquarters.
