The new underground car park at Colón will open with modern charging points and spaces for residents
In Madrid, beneath Plaza de Colón, the refurbishment of the car park has begun, with spaces reserved for residents and charging points for electric vehicles.
The renovation of the car park located beneath Plaza de Colón will turn it into a modern underground facility with 570 spaces, of which 150 will be reserved for residents and business owners, as well as 156 charging points for electric vehicles. The works are expected to last 16 months, with a budget of 6.7 million euros, and are being carried out as part of the Madrid 360 environmental sustainability strategy.
The new parking plan combines short-stay spaces and monthly passes for residents, allowing residents to obtain a monthly pass for 70 euros. The three underground levels include 18 spaces for people with reduced mobility and separate areas for motorcycles.
In addition to reorganising the spaces, the project includes the renovation of the architecture, technical installations, lighting, and information panels, as well as full compliance with modern safety and accessibility standards.
The renovation of the car park is the first phase of a large-scale project: in the future, a logistics and sustainable mobility centre of over 5,000 m² will be created beneath Plaza de Colón, combining urban logistics areas with carsharing services, bicycle parking, high-power charging points, and stations for electric vehicles. This will help reduce delivery vehicle traffic in the city centre and shift some activity to nighttime hours.
The car park will be open every day, including spaces for residents and business owners, and the new centre will be part of the network of nine transport hubs already operating in Madrid, to improve the efficiency of urban mobility.
