The old Rodalies app stops working this Tuesday: what's changing

Rodalies users will need to switch to a new app starting this Tuesday, 15 September. The old Rodalies de Catalunya app will stop working, and it will be necessary to use the new platform to continue accessing information and digital services for the network from your mobile.

The new app has been available since 17 August, but the change is now permanent. Rodalies had kept both versions running in parallel for a few weeks to make the transition easier before retiring the previous one.

One of the main new features is the ability to track the location of trains live on the map. The app also shows the real-time status of the service, a particularly useful function when there are delays, breakdowns, or changes to the schedule.

The update also adds the option to buy tickets directly from your mobile. The platform now brings together in a single app functions that previously might have required travellers to use different Renfe services to check routes and manage their journeys.

Users can also access interactive network maps, save favourite stations and regular routes, and receive personalised information based on their travel habits. For example, the app allows you to keep your most frequently used routes easily accessible.

Another new feature is voice search. Travellers can use spoken commands to find routes, a function that adds to the accessibility improvements included in the new version.

Rodalies does not officially identify these recommendations as an artificial intelligence system. The company explains that the app adapts some information to the user's habits, but does not specify that AI is used for this, so that technology should not be assumed.

The new tool also maintains a distinct Rodalies de Catalunya identity, with its own icon and design so it can be easily recognised in app stores. It is available for both Android devices and iPhone.

Behind the change is a project developed over roughly a year. Work began in September 2025 and involved the eight professionals who make up the Centro de Competencias Digitales de Renfe in Portbou.

The key date is now approaching for those still using the previous version. From 15 September, it will stop working and the new app will become the mobile channel Rodalies offers to check the service, track trains, plan routes, and buy tickets.
