UB's new neuroscience centre strengthens Barcelona's scientific role
Barcelona is preparing to strengthen its scientific position with the creation of the Barcelona Centre for Applied Neurosciences (BCAN), a project promoted by the University of Barcelona that will have an investment of €12 million.
The new facility will be built on the Llars Mundet site, with construction scheduled to begin in July 2027. The timetable sets the end of 2028 as the completion date, although the centre will reach full operation around 2030.
BCAN was created to promote interdisciplinary research on the brain, combining fields such as neurobiology, technology and health. The new facilities will make it possible to develop more ambitious projects and improve working conditions for scientific teams.
The project also seeks to attract international talent and strengthen the connection between the university, the business community and society. In this sense, the centre aims to become an innovation hub with an impact on both basic research and its practical applications.
The initiative is a step forward for the local scientific community, which will be able to expand its research capacity in an increasingly competitive context. Barcelona thus strengthens its role as a European hub for science and knowledge, with a clear commitment to disciplines key to the future.
