The Thousand-Year-Old Olive Tree of Sant Jordi, crowned Spain’s Best Monumental Olive Tree 2025
It has no plaques, marble or inauguration date. But it has stood silently and monumentally for more than 1,200 years.
The Thousand-Year-Old Olive Tree of Sant Jordi, in the very heart of Territorio Sénia, has been chosen as Spain's Best Monumental Olive Tree 2025, and it is not only because of its size —770 cm in circumference— or its age —planted in the year 744—, but because of what it represents: the living memory of a land that has known how to respect its roots.
Located in the Mas Na Cabanes area, this colossus of the Farga variety continues to bear olives as though time did not exist, and its twisted silhouette seems to have come out of a novel. Each branch contains centuries of history; each knot, a quiet resilience.
The distinction, awarded by AEMO, also recognises the patient work of the Marí Sospedra family and the commitment of the Ayuntamiento de Sant Jordi to turn this olive tree into something more than a tree: into a symbol, a story, a future.
Eight olive trees in Territorio Sénia have now received this award. But few like this one manage to remind us that heritage is not always enclosed in museums. Sometimes it is found at the edge of a path, under a still sky, telling stories without saying a word.
