Royal Palace opens new spaces to the public with previously unseen pieces
Madrid's Royal Palace expands its route with the opening of the Relicario and Anterrelicario of the Royal Chapel, two spaces previously closed that add new works and restored pieces to the visit.
After months of work, visitors can access these rooms from the chapel or through the Galería del Patio del Príncipe. The reorganisation of the collections provides a clearer route, with paintings, furniture and silver pieces from the Colecciones Reales.
A highlight in the Relicario is a group of silver objects displayed in an 18th-century cabinet, including a historical relief depicting the meeting between Attila and Pope León Magno. The space also has new LED lighting, which significantly reduces energy consumption.
The Anterrelicario brings together religious paintings, reliquaries and restored decorative pieces, some previously seen in the Galería de las Colecciones Reales, which are now integrated into a more comprehensive route.
This expansion reinforces the role of the Palacio Real as one of Madrid’s major cultural hubs. For residents and visitors, it offers a new way to rediscover the city’s historical heritage and broadens the range of cultural activities in the centre. With this opening, Madrid continues its commitment to highlighting its heritage. From now on, those visiting the palace will be able to access these new spaces, while the site is expected to continue refreshing its offering in the coming years.
