The corridor between L1 and L3 at Plaça Catalunya closes for two months and will alter thousands of daily journeys
Getting around central Barcelona this summer will be a little more difficult for thousands of metro users. The underground link between the L1 and L3 lines at Plaça Catalunya station will remain closed for two months for a comprehensive refurbishment that will force passengers to go outside to complete their interchange.
Although the authorities insist that it does not currently represent an immediate risk, the works will make it possible to adapt the passageway to regulations and completely modernise this strategic point in the metro network. The project has a budget of 1.5 million euros.
During the works, those needing to transfer between the red and green lines will have to go outside and walk between station entrances to complete the journey. TMB has scheduled the closure for summer to reduce the impact on daily mobility, taking advantage of the usual fall in passengers during July and August.
The closure also comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the metro network. The interchange between L1 and L5 at plaça de Sants is also currently out of service for accessibility and extension works. This leaves several of Barcelona’s major interchange points operating with simultaneous restrictions.
Plaça Catalunya station is one of the city’s major transport hubs and connects the metro, Rodalies, FGC and numerous bus routes. Every day, thousands of people use its passageways to travel between Eixample, Ciutat Vella and other key areas of Barcelona. Therefore, any intervention at this point has an immediate impact on the urban routine and mobility in the city centre.
