The Penedès breaks the mould: the world’s first 100% organic grape harvest

For the first time, a designation of origin is converting its entire harvest to 100% organic, a step that places this Catalan territory on the world map of wine-growing sustainability.

What began as a strategic plan in 2020 and accelerated in 2021 has matured ahead of schedule, bringing wineries and winegrowers together around a model in which innovation and environmental respect go hand in hand. “Being organic is not a label; it is a way of looking to the future,” Francesc Olivella, director of the DO, sums up.

The path has not been easy: adapting soils, dealing with pests without pesticides and accepting that production may fall has required commitment and vision. But the added value — for the territory, for the consumer, for the planet — is priceless.

Almost half a century after Josep Maria Albet i Noya went it alone in organic winegrowing, his commitment is flourishing in a Penedès that no longer looks to the future: it is writing it, glass by glass.
