El Prat begins key renovations and prepares for possible expansion
Barcelona airport is undergoing works that will affect flights and terminals. Aena is investing over 110 million to renew runways and modernise T2. The works are laying the groundwork for a future expansion that is still under discussion.
El Prat Airport is entering a new phase of renovation with an investment that will exceed 110 million euros through 2028. Aena is planning a series of actions aimed at updating the infrastructure, streamlining runway operations, and reducing environmental impact, in a context that anticipates future expansions.
One of the main points will be the resurfacing of one of the main runways, which will require its closure for between 50 and 60 days in the winter of 2027 or 2028 and a temporary reduction in air operations. This will be accompanied by the construction of rapid exits and the adaptation of various systems to improve traffic efficiency.
Terminal 2 will also undergo a major renovation, with an investment of 65.2 million euros, while the cross runway will be adjusted to minimise noise in nearby areas. At the same time, the expansion project linked to La Ricarda is still awaiting its environmental assessment.
This set of interventions is redefining the airport’s outlook, with direct effects on travellers’ experience, economic activity, and the debate on how to balance growth and environmental impact in the city.
