Sant Jordi in Barcelona arrives with pricier roses but rising sales

Sant Jordi arrives in Barcelona with a slight increase in the price of roses. Even so, everything points to one of the most crowded editions in recent years. The festival falls on a weekday and, after Semana Santa, a large turnout is expected in the streets and bookshops.

The price increase is mainly due to external factors. The rise in fuel prices, which is key for air transport from América Latina, and the increase in the minimum wage in Colombia have pushed up costs at source. Part of this impact is passed on to the final price, although only moderately.

In practical terms, a quality rose will start at around 5 euros. More elaborate or designer versions can range from 8 to 20 euros, depending on the design and presentation. Despite this adjustment, the sector does not expect a drop in demand.

Forecasts point to high figures. Across Catalunya, around 7 million roses could be sold, maintaining the volume of previous years. Most will continue to be imported, with Colombia as the main source, followed by Ecuador. Local production remains very limited.

The context favours a high turnout. As it falls on a weekday and after the break for Semana Santa, a steady flow of people is expected throughout the day, both in shopping areas and in the usual sales spots.

Prices are rising slightly, but the tradition remains unchanged, with expectations of even busier streets than usual. Sant Jordi will once again turn Barcelona into a major meeting point, with activity throughout the day.
