Barcelona’s drivers have faced another blow to their finances this week: the price of fuel has risen markedly in just four days. Diesel has gone up by 20 cents per litre and petrol by 16 cents, an escalation not seen for months that affects both private individuals and transport professionals.

The main cause of this upturn lies in international tensions. The closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, in Iran, has interrupted the passage of around 20% of the world’s oil, creating uncertainty in the markets and an immediate reaction at the city’s petrol stations. Forecasts suggest prices will continue to rise, at least until the end of the week, forcing many Barcelona residents to rethink their journeys and daily spending.

The impact is particularly noticeable in neighbourhoods where car use is more common and among those who depend on a vehicle for work. Industry associations warn that the situation could drag on if the usual flow of crude oil is not restored, adding pressure to a local economy already strained by inflation and the rising cost of other basic services.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the nerve centres of the global oil trade. One fifth of the crude oil consumed across the planet passes through this maritime route. Any disruption to its operation has immediate consequences for international prices and, by extension, for the cost of living in cities such as Barcelona, where energy dependence remains high despite the push for sustainable alternatives.
