The first large autonomous bus has started operating in Madrid
The first autonomous bus has hit the streets in Madrid, showing how the future of urban transport is becoming a reality
An autonomous bus has been launched in the city and is already carrying passengers around the Mercamadrid site. It is a fully electric vehicle measuring 6.6 metres long, with capacity for 32 people and able to travel up to 200 kilometres without recharging its battery.
The route is equipped with dozens of sensors: cameras, LiDAR sensors and ultrasonic “eyes” help the bus orient itself safely, maintain its course and stop exactly where necessary. This level of equipment enables the vehicle to operate at autonomy level 4+.
The project has been developed by the company Alsa and presented as part of the Mobilities for EU initiative, which aims to reduce emissions and introduce intelligent transport in Europe’s main cities.
