The first San Sebastián de los Reyes bull run leaves ten injured
This Tuesday, San Sebastián de los Reyes opened its traditional bull runs with a fast run, 1,800 runners and ten people injured. Most of the treatments were due to falls, and one of those affected suffered a traumatic brain injury, according to Protección Civil's report.
The bulls from the Hermanos Tardeu ranch covered the 820 metres of the route to the pens at the La Tercera bullring in two minutes and eight seconds. The section through the streets was completed in just one minute and forty seconds.
The barriers and stands filled up again from early morning. The City Council estimates that around 4,500 people watched the run from the designated spaces, in addition to the runners who took part directly along the route through the historic centre.
The medical tally was ten injured people, although no gorings have been reported. The most serious case was a person with a traumatic brain injury, treated and assessed at the field hospital set up during the festivities.
The morning is only the beginning of a particularly intense week in the municipality. This same Tuesday there will be a second running of the bulls at 22:00, the only night-time one in the series, with bulls from Hermanos García Jiménez.
From Wednesday onwards, the runs will return to their 11 in the morning schedule. The festivities envisage eight bull runs until Monday 31 August, with ranches such as Zalduendo, São Torcato, La Castilleja, Núñez de Tarifa and Montealto over the coming days.
Throughout the week, the deployment affects a large part of mobility in the centre of San Sebastián de los Reyes. Barriered streets, access controls, stands and emergency services transform the routine of residents, businesses and visitors around the route for a few hours.
The first run thus leaves a very recognisable image of late August in Sanse: packed wooden barriers, runners waiting for the start and a herd crossing the historic centre at high speed. Tonight, the same route will change atmosphere with the 22:00 night-time bull run.
UPDATE: Since the first bull run, the San Sebastián de los Reyes festivities have held five more runs. The most difficult outcome came on Friday 28 August, when a crush at the entrance to the bullring ultimately brought the number of people treated to 35, with 15 hospital transfers and four patients referred to La Paz with a guarded prognosis due to trauma. One day later, the sixth bull run was much calmer: it brought together around 2,500 runners and left six people with minor injuries from falls, all discharged. The series continues this Sunday 30 August at 11:00 with the seventh bull run, featuring bulls from Juan Pedro Domecq and Álvaro Núñez.
