Vallecas closes for safety reasons and forces Rayo to move temporarily
Vallecas Stadium will close immediately for emergency works that will force Rayo Vallecano to play its home matches at another venue. The decision comes just weeks before the start of LaLiga and completely changes the club's sporting plans and those of thousands of fans.
The Comunidad de Madrid has provisionally suspended the stadium concession after an audit uncovered serious safety, maintenance, and hygiene deficiencies. The report concludes that the venue is highly outdated and has several breaches that require immediate action.
Work will begin straight away and could last between two and six months, although the final schedule will depend on how the works progress. In the meantime, Rayo will have to find an alternative stadium for their home matches, a decision that will need to be coordinated with LaLiga and the Federation.
The closure comes at a particularly sensitive time. The first league match scheduled in Vallecas was set for 20 August against Alavés, but it will now have to be moved if the works are still ongoing. The situation also coincides with the season ticket campaign and is causing uncertainty among the team's supporters.
The audit found problems with fire protection systems, deficiencies in electrical installations and emergency lighting, as well as significant hygiene and maintenance shortcomings. Among the risks highlighted is even the possibility of legionella developing due to a lack of control in certain facilities.
The stadium, owned by the Comunidad de Madrid, has been the subject of criticism for years from fans and club staff due to the deterioration of some areas. The planned works will serve as a preliminary step towards a more extensive renovation aimed at modernising the venue and increasing its capacity in the coming years.
For Vallecas, the closure goes far beyond football. Every league match transforms the neighbourhood, fills bars and shops, and turns the streets around the stadium into a meeting point for locals and visitors. Over the coming months, that activity will move elsewhere while the historic ground undergoes one of its most significant interventions since it opened.
