The Círculo de Bellas Artes climate refuge reinvents summer in Madrid
Madrid once again gains a refuge from the heat right in the centre. Círculo de Bellas Artes is transforming its Ballroom into a climate refuge open to the public, with free admission, designed to rest, read, work or simply pause during the harshest hours of summer.

The space is open from 11:00 to 21:00 and is conceived as more than a cool room. The proposal turns one of the city’s most recognisable cultural buildings into a kind of indoor square, with greenery, rest areas and corners where people can spend time without any obligation to buy anything.
One of its most striking features is the siestódromo, with hammocks and spaces designed for lying down, switching off and restoring energy. In a city where heat is increasingly shaping daily life, the possibility of resting in a cool, free place becomes a small urban luxury.
The refuge also includes reading areas, board games, chess, work tables, hydration points and cultural activities linked to sustainability. The idea is that each person can use the space in their own way: as a break, a quiet plan or an alternative to the heat in the street.
Another of the most unusual proposals is the plant nursery. People going away can leave their pots there to be cared for over the summer, an initiative that combines humour, environmental awareness and everyday life.
The project arrives at a time when Madrid increasingly needs cool, accessible and well-located spaces. Heatwaves are no longer an exception, and many people are looking for places to take refuge without relying only on shopping centres, bars or homes with air conditioning.
The location of the Círculo de Bellas Artes reinforces its usefulness. Situated by Alcalá and a few steps from Cibeles and Gran Vía, the refuge can serve residents as well as workers, students, visitors and people passing through the centre during the hottest hours.
This climate refuge changes the idea of a summer plan. Not everything has to be a terrace, swimming pool or getaway: sometimes, getting through July and August means finding a place to slow down, breathe cool air and remember that resting can also be a way of caring for the city.
