Line 6 will remain closed until September 2026, extending the impact on Madrid mobility
Mobility in Madrid is again adapting to a timetable longer than expected. The section of Metro de Madrid's Line 6 between Avenida de América and Laguna will not reopen until September 2026, extending for months the disruption on one of the network's most used lines.
The delay affects 14 key stations in the south-eastern arc, an area where thousands of people depend daily on the circular line to work, study or travel between neighbourhoods. The extension of the deadlines forces people to reorganise their journeys and seek alternatives for longer than expected.
The works, which began in November 2024, had May 2026 as their target. However, the project's technical complexity and the need to reconcile different phases of intervention have led to an extension of the timetable. The Community of Madrid explains that priority work in certain areas and the limitations of night-time hours have caused delays to other work.
The modernisation of L6 forms part of an overall plan worth close to €800 million. It includes the arrival of new trains, the installation of automatic platform doors and the complete renewal of the infrastructure. The aim is to transform the line into a safer and more efficient system, with a view to its automation in the coming years.
If no further changes arise, September 2026 will mark the end of this phase of works. After that, the gradual introduction of the new trains and the first automation tests, scheduled for 2027, will begin.
Line 6, known as the Circular, is one of the essential axes of Madrid's transport system. Its operation shapes the city's daily life, especially in areas with fewer direct alternatives. Every adjustment to its timetable affects not only transport, but also the pace at which Madrid organises and moves.
