The burying of the A-5 is progressing and will transform south-west Madrid with less traffic and more green areas. Excavation of the southern tunnel is already complete, a key step to reduce surface traffic and transform neighbourhoods such as Lucero, Aluche and Las Águilas.
The municipal plan still aims to open the road to traffic by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the exit tunnel is now over 70% complete and is expected to be finished in the coming weeks, bringing the project closer to its final stage.
One of the current technical challenges is connecting with the M-30. This phase will be key to integrating the new route into the city's main network and ensuring smooth and safe operation.
At the same time, the project is starting to focus on the surface. From September, work will begin on the future Paseo Verde del Suroeste, an 80,000-square-metre area that will replace asphalt with pedestrian spaces and greenery.
The new corridor, more than three kilometres long, will link Madrid Río with other major green spaces, creating a continuous route for walking or cycling without interruptions.
For local residents, the change will be immediate: less noise, fewer cars, and more space to walk. The project is not just altering a road; it is also redefining how the neighbourhood is experienced and how areas that were separated by traffic for decades are connected.
