Tast a la Rambla defies the heat and fills plaça de Catalunya with fine cuisine

Barcelona has launched the 12th edition of Tast a la Rambla with a very recognisable mix of the city: intense heat, queues in the sun and a desire to eat well. Since Thursday, plaça de Catalunya has become a large open-air gastronomic bar, with Barcelona residents and visitors ready to try signature tapas despite midday temperatures above 30 degrees.

The heatwave, one of the harshest this May, has not emptied the square. On the contrary: since opening, several stalls have drawn queues and a festive atmosphere. The organisers and chefs have preferred to focus on the pleasant side of the weather: better sun than rain, even if this time the sun means seeking shade, cold drinks and iced desserts between tapas.

This year the fair brings together 30 restaurants and six pastry shops, with tastings at a fixed price of 6 euros. The formula retains its usual appeal: bringing dishes from renowned restaurants closer to the public without the need for a reservation or a large bill. In a single circuit around the square, visitors can move from traditional Catalan recipes to more current offerings, with tacos, truffled biquinis, Mexican cuisine or high-end restaurant bites.

Among the most sought-after dishes were Nandu Jubany's roast-meat cannelloni with mushrooms, Carles Abellán's truffled bikini, Kiosko Universal's capipota and La Mafia Mexicana's quesabirria. Some cooks even defended stews and spoon dishes in the full heat, recalling that some flavours do not pay much heed to the season when they are well made.

Tast is also holding a special edition because it will be its last in Plaça de Catalunya before its planned return to Rambla Santa Mònica, once work on the promenade progresses. The temporary move has not dimmed the event's spirit: these days the square serves as a central showcase for Barcelona cuisine, with chefs, pastry chefs, producers and curious visitors sharing space in the street.

The day also saw the presentation of the III Premi Tast a la Rambla to Ramon Agenjo, an Estrella Damm executive and great-grandson of the brand's founder. The recognition underlines his connection with local gastronomic culture and adds him to a list of award winners that already includes names closely linked to Barcelona's restaurant and pastry scene.

Beyond the individual dishes, Tast a la Rambla works because it turns gastronomy into an urban experience that is easy to share. There is no need to know all the restaurants or follow haute cuisine closely: it is enough to come along, choose a tapa, talk about the discovery and keep walking. That blend of curiosity, street life and local produce explains why the event keeps growing even when the weather is not favourable.

In a Barcelona marked by early heat and an increasingly crowded calendar, events like this recall the value of public space when it is used for more than simply passing through. Plaça de Catalunya is filled these days with food, conversation and small happy decisions: what to try first, where to find shade and which dish to recommend afterwards. Therein lies much of Tast's charm: getting the city to sit down to eat together, even if standing up and with a fan.
