The Teatre Capitol on the Ramblas will reopen in 2027 as a new municipal cultural space
Barcelona recovers one of its most emblematic stages. The Teatre Capitol, closed since 2019, will reopen in 2027 under municipal ownership, beginning a new stage in which it will combine its historic theatrical function with new public and administrative uses.
The reopening of the Capitol, located right on the Rambla, is part of the City Council’s commitment to restoring the cultural spirit of this boulevard. After renovation work, the building will have two performance spaces—one with 402 seats and another with 198—that will expand the theatre offering in the city centre.
But the new Capitol will go far beyond theatre. The building will also house the offices of the Servicios Centrales del Consorci de Biblioteques de Barcelona, making better use of resources and giving the space new functions linked to the city’s library network.
Mayor Jaume Collboni has identified 2027 as a key year: “New Rambla and new Capitol.” The reopening of this iconic theatre marks another step in transforming the Ramblas into a true cultural hub, designed for local residents and for anyone who wants to experience a Barcelona that brings together history, culture, and the future on a single stage.
