Barcelona leaves the storms behind: how the weather will change from this Thursday
Barcelona will end this Wednesday under rain, but the most adverse episode has only a few hours left. After a day marked by storms and locally very intense rainfall, Thursday will bring a clear change: the rain will stop, humidity will fall and night-time temperatures will drop by several degrees.
Aemet is maintaining rain and storm warnings this Wednesday 9 September on Barcelona’s coast. The orange level, valid for much of the day, covers rainfall that may reach 60 litres per square metre in one hour and accumulations of more than 100 litres in three or four hours. Storms may also be accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts.
The situation will lose intensity during the afternoon and night. After 20:00, the warning drops to yellow and ends at midnight. Thursday 10 does not show the same scenario: Barcelona will have intervals of cloud, broad clear spells and a much lower probability of rain.
The change will also be noticeable on the thermometer. After the more than 32 ºC recorded on Tuesday in the Drassanes area, Thursday’s forecast maximum will remain around 27 ºC. The minimum may be around 17–19 ºC, several degrees below the warm nights Barcelona has experienced during the first days of September.
The difference will be especially perceptible at dawn. During the early hours of Wednesday, Barcelona airport was still recording temperatures above 26 ºC and humidity close to 80%. On Thursday, by contrast, the atmosphere will be cooler and less humid, which will make it possible to temporarily leave behind nights of intense mugginess.
The respite will continue during the Diada. For Friday 11, the forecast points to little cloud or clear skies, no significant rain and highs close to 28–29 ºC. It will be a much more favourable scenario for the events and journeys planned during the public holiday.
The change, therefore, does not consist of the arrival of several days of storms, but precisely the opposite: Barcelona is going through the most difficult point of the episode this Wednesday and from Thursday will regain considerably more stable weather.
Instability could return intermittently over the weekend. Saturday shows some possibility of showers, especially during the first part of the day, while Sunday will again see a sunnier scenario prevail, with highs close to 29 ºC.
