TRAM marks 22 years in Barcelona with a historic demand record and more than 532 million journeys

TRAM turns 22 with record demand in Barcelona and more than 532 million journeys to date!

This 3 April, TRAM celebrates 22 years in the Barcelona metropolitan area with the highest demand figures in its history. The network ended 2025 with 39,232,670 ticket validations, 11.9% more than the previous year, and has now exceeded 532.9 million journeys since it launched in 2004.

The growth is partly explained by the strong momentum of Trambesòs, which recorded 14,765,604 journeys in 2025, 30.56% more than in 2024. Meanwhile, Trambaix reached 24,467,066 journeys, an increase of 3.02%. Taken together, the figures consolidate the tram's position as one of the networks with the strongest recent growth in metropolitan transport.

One of the most visible changes came with the extension of the T4 between Glòries and Verdaguer, opened at the end of 2024. During its first full calendar year in service, the line recorded 9,617,766 journeys, compared with 7,494,658 the previous year, an increase of 28.33%.

The busiest stops were Ernest Lluch, with an average of 7,211 ticket validations per working day, and Glòries, with 6,927. The operator also highlights that growth was not limited to weekdays: journeys on Saturdays and Sundays increased on both networks too.

Since 2004, the system's cumulative total has reached 361,117,052 journeys on Trambaix and 171,801,866 on Trambesòs. The network currently connects nine municipalities in the metropolitan region and has become an increasingly important part of everyday travel between Barcelona, Baix Llobregat and the area around the Besòs.
