Eixample unlocks the relocation of the fire station and the future Escola Entença

The City Council is moving forward with relocating the fire station to Avinguda Sarrià and creating the new Escola Entença. The urban-planning change, key for healthcare and education, is expected to receive final approval in 2027. The plan also affects the future of CAP Casanovas and the Muñoz Ramonet cultural centre.

The future of several key facilities in Eixample takes a decisive step after the initial approval of the urban-planning change that will allow the fire station to be moved to Avinguda Sarrià and the new Escola Entença to be built. This long-awaited amendment to the Metropolitan General Plan unlocks an operation that directly affects the everyday lives of thousands of local residents and families.

The municipal plenary has given the proposal the green light, with the support of the local government, PSC, Barcelona en Comú and ERC. Junts chose to abstain, pointing to the slowness of the process, while PP and Vox voted against, criticising the lack of dialogue with residents. Final approval is expected in 2027, after more than a decade of uncertainty over the fate of the fire station located in Joan Miró Park.

The plan provides for the new fire station to be located on Avinguda de Sarrià, at the corner with Londres, improving emergency coverage in the district. Escola Entença, which until now has operated in temporary conditions in the former Modelo prison, will have its permanent premises at Provença and Villarroel. In addition, the municipal government hopes that this progress will make it possible to resume pending renovations at CAP Casanovas, another essential service for the neighbourhood.

In the same session, the plenary gave final approval to the urban-planning regulation of the Muñoz Ramonet cultural centre, located in the historic residence at 282 Carrer de Muntaner. The aim is to remodel the mansion during the next term of office and open it to new cultural uses, although Vox broke ranks by voting against.

The Eixample fire station has been the subject of debate since a court ruling annulled its location in Joan Miró Park more than a decade ago. The search for a definitive solution has generated tensions between public administrations and residents, especially because of the need to guarantee efficient emergency services and decent educational spaces. The new location on Avinguda Sarrià responds to accessibility and operational criteria, while Escola Entença will be able to leave years of temporary arrangements behind and establish itself as an educational reference point in the district.
