With the arrival of spring, Madrid adds a distinctive proposal for those looking for different plans: the return of the Tren de Arganda. This historic railway, the only steam train running in the Community, is starting up again and offers an experience that blends nostalgia, landscape and local culture. For many, it is an opportunity to rediscover corners of south-eastern Madrid and share a different day out with family or friends.
The Tren de Arganda is managed by an association of volunteers that devotes time and effort to preserving this railway heritage. The atmosphere at Poveda station, especially on Sunday mornings, reflects the enthusiasm of those involved in the project and of travellers who come to enjoy the experience. Beyond the journey, the initiative helps keep part of Madrid's industrial history alive and energise the area's cultural life.
The Tren de Arganda, Madrid's only steam train, restarts its season 29 March-14 June 2026 (1st Saturday/month + Sundays), 4 departures daily (10:00,11:00,12:00,13:00) Poveda (Arganda)-Laguna Campillo (Rivas), ~4km/45min crossing the Jarama.
