Tren Granota runs again in Barcelona with historic journeys until December
Barcelona recovers one of its most beloved railway symbols. The historic Tren Granota runs again this Sunday, offering a different journey between Les Planes, Terrassa and Sabadell. The initiative will make it possible to enjoy this classic train on the first Sunday of each month until December, with a break in summer.
The route is not merely a journey, but an experience. On board, passengers pass through architecturally valuable stations such as Sant Quirze del Vallès, rediscovering the Vallès railway landscape from a historical perspective. Tickets can be bought both in integrated format and in the format of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, adapting to different journeys.
Built in 1944 in the Sarrià workshops, the Tren Granota was key to the modernisation of transport in the midst of the post-war period. Its innovative design and reliability made it an essential part of the former Ferrocarril de Sarrià for decades, until it was withdrawn in 1996.
Today, its return has symbolic value. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional in 2023, the train is preserved as part of Catalan industrial heritage, recalling a key stage in the evolution of mobility in the region.
The proposal connects generations: those who used it in its day and those discovering it for the first time. More than a journey, it is a way of understanding how transport has shaped the territory.
This type of initiative turns transport into a cultural experience. Recovering historic trains not only preserves memory, but also offers new ways of travelling through the area, strengthening the link between mobility, history and leisure in the Barcelona area.
