Heavy traffic in Madrid during the second phase of Semana Santa
Madrid is experiencing days of heavy traffic with the second phase of the Operación Salida de Semana Santa. The Dirección General de Tráfico expects around 1.86 million journeys in the region, in an exodus that disrupts the city's mobility and pace.
The biggest complications will arise from Wednesday afternoon, between 15:00 and 23:00, when the main exit routes will experience traffic jams. Thursday will see heavy traffic continue, especially towards tourist destinations and coastal areas.
Friday will bring some relative respite, although there will still be journeys to nearby towns and religious celebrations. On Saturday, short trips will once again put pressure on the roads, while Sunday will mark the start of the mass return to the capital.
Throughout the operation, the DGT will implement special measures to manage traffic and will step up checks on speed, alcohol, drugs, and mobile phone use, aiming to reduce accidents.
On Monday, the return will be completed in several regions, coinciding in Madrid with the resumption of normal activity, which could make traffic even more difficult on main roads and access routes.
During these days when the city changes pace, mobility becomes the main challenge, reflecting how Madrid adapts to one of the busiest times of the year.
