KBr opens free in Barcelona today for World Photography Day
This Wednesday, 19 August, Barcelona has a free cultural plan by the seafront. KBr Photography Centre opens its exhibitions free of charge for World Photography Day, an opportunity to discover two very different displays in one visit.
the main proposal is dedicated to Minor White, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century American photography. The exhibition brings together around 250 vintage prints and is the first major retrospective of his work organised in Europe.
The tour passes through different stages of his career and offers an approach to his particular way of photographing nature, landscapes, portraits and the street. It also pays particular attention to his photographic sequences, sets of images conceived to converse with one another and construct an experience closer to visual storytelling.
The second room looks towards Barcelona and post-war Catalunya. Joaquín Tusquets de Cabirol. The eloquent formrecovers the work of an amateur photographer from Barcelona who devoted much of the 1940s and 1950s to portraying everyday scenes, urban landscapes, the coast and the rural world.
Tusquets was a chemist and industrialist by profession and personally carried out much of the photographic process. His archive, made up of thousands of negatives and prints, makes it possible to observe a Barcelona very different from today’s through apparently small scenes: streets, people, journeys and everyday moments captured with a very careful eye.
Free entry provides access to both exhibitions and can be reserved in advance or obtained at the ticket desk during the day. KBr is open from 11:00 to 20:00 and is located on Avinguda del Litoral, next to Port Olímpic, so the visit can easily fit into an afternoon in this part of the seafront.
Both exhibitions will remain open until 6 September, although the extraordinary free admission linked to World Photography Day is concentrated on this Wednesday the 19th. Outside the usual free-admission days, general entry to the centre costs 5 euros.
The day offers one of those August plans that allow visitors to spend a few hours in a cultural space without moving away from the atmosphere of the beach and seafront promenade. Inside await almost 250 images by Minor White and a post-war Barcelona seen by Tusquets; outside, Port Olímpic and the coast remain in the height of the summer season.
