Is it possible to travel the world cheaply?

Have you ever dreamed of travelling the world, getting lost in its streets, savouring the cuisine of a thousand and one cultures and treasuring unforgettable experiences? Letting your imagination run free is harmless and costs nothing, and gives rise to countless dreams. Unreachable? Not at all. If travelling is a recurring dream in your lives, do not stop doing it because you think it is a privilege reserved for the elite. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Each of us certainly has our own reasons for experiencing the adrenaline of exploration, escaping everyday stress and immersing ourselves in vibrant cultures. What is clear is that being able to travel cheaply around the world will not only enrich our experiences; it will also make us more aware, adaptable and wiser citizens of the world.

This is where many of us ask ourselves: is it really possible to travel cheaply around the world? It is, if we devote time to organising trips by seeking out the options that suit us best economically and functionally. But first, we must leave behind the idea that these adventures are for wealthy people. No.

At Travelcover, we want to advise you on travelling economically. We are going to reveal some secrets and tools that will allow you to design fascinating itineraries, sleep in welcoming places and savour the essence of each destination without the budget becoming a drama.

Travelling economically around the world

Travelling cheaply from country to country is not a fleeting dream; it can be an achievable reality. We assure you that getting to know exotic cultures and distant landscapes is within the reach of most budgets. We do not need, by any means, a stroke of luck or an unexpected inheritance to embark on the trip or trips we long for.

We will need, however, good worldwide travel insurance, since on adventures of this kind, we need to be well covered against any eventuality. The world is always waiting for us, vibrant with its hidden treasures, for us to become seasoned globetrotters. Achieving it, however, involves having a little shrewdness and planning.

Join us on this journey of practical advice and discover how to make the budget more flexible in order to reach every corner of the planet with our backpack on our backs.

Draw up a strategic plan

Although spontaneity can be charming on a trip, when the budget is limited, planning will be a good ally.

It is not about creating a rigid itinerary, but about undertaking a thorough study that guides us through the cities and countries we want to explore. We need to define the duration of the journey, how many days to spend at each point and, consequently, map out the complete route we will follow.

By reducing uncertainty, we will also reduce unexpected expenses, since last-minute flights and accommodation tend to have exorbitant prices. Remember that planning is not a straitjacket, but a tool that will allow us to make the most of our time and resources.

Choose the perfect season

If we can, we should escape the hordes of tourists. They are generally linked to inflated prices and poorer use of time. That said, why limit ourselves to the usual holiday dates? If we want to travel without it becoming a burden on our wallet, we will have to research thoroughly which is the best time to visit the destination we have in mind. Travelling in the low season is a great option for our wallets.

We invite you to enter the magic of the shoulder season, when the sun still shines intensely without the oppression of crowds and, as we say, hotels, attractions and means of transport offer us genuinely attractive deals and low prices.

If we really want to travel cheaply around the world, flexibility will be another great ally. We should not be afraid to adjust the itinerary if we find a top deal or fall in love with an unexpected destination.

Opting for cheap accommodation without sacrificing comfort

The world offers endless alternatives for staying somewhere without emptying the bank account. We need to dare to explore other options. For example, hostels with their exhilarating atmospheres. Places where we will share some resources but which will surely give us unforgettable experiences with other international guests.

If we are looking for an even more authentic experience, choose to stay in a guest room through platforms such as Airbnb or Couchsurfing. This way, we can immerse ourselves in the local culture, sharing space with hosts who will open the doors of their home to us.

Let us not forget the option of visiting relatives or friends who live in the destination we are going to visit. Reunions with loved ones, new places to discover and free accommodation… We see it as an almost unbeatable combination for travelling economically.

Light luggage, limitless adventure

Put aside suitcases crammed full and the extra monetary charges for excess baggage. Less is more. Travelling with the essentials is more than enough. In the initial, exhaustive planning before the trip, we will know exactly what we are going to need. We must make sure to take with us everything needed to enjoy your trip. That “everything needed” does not have to mean a lot.

Book flights with shrewdness and boldness

Booking in advance will save us money. If time is running out, do not worry about being left without tickets because, for example, airlines release their seats up to a year in advance. What happens is that, as you well know, the closer the travel date comes, the more prices soar.

That is why we must become a kind of planning strategist and, when it comes to buying transport tickets, book them, as we say, well in advance.

Choose your flight days well

Did you know that the day of the week on which we fly can affect the price of the plane ticket? Our advice is that you book the flight for a Tuesday, for example. Flights tend to be cheaper during the week, while at weekends prices soar.

IF we travel during the week, we will probably encounter far fewer users, and we will not suffer long queues at baggage check-in or boarding. That is why we like to advise travelling during the week, so as to enjoy smoother movement and a better use of our time.

It should be said that luxury is not always in the ticket class. Economy class today offers us everything needed to reach your destination comfortably, allowing us to save a good amount of money which we can then invest in much more pleasant activities and experiences.

No luxury restaurants

Choose to sample local cuisine in inexpensive restaurants. Explore local markets and supermarkets, where we are sure to find endless interesting places and good, cheap food options.

We can also be our own chefs and cook on some days in the hostel or flat where we are staying. On a long trip, always eating lunch and dinner out is the opposite of travelling cheaply around the world. It will drive up our expenses. We therefore recommend enjoying the satisfaction of preparing our own culinary creations at much more moderate prices.

Do not forget that beer is not the only drink that quenches thirst. We should alternate paid alcoholic or sugary drinks with fresh water.

Master public transport and save big

Travelling cheaply will almost certainly require us to forget taxi services and car rentals. Public transport is generally inexpensive, and we must get used to knowing it well and using it to limit our spending. It also helps us get around cities with a certain order and learn, through stops and signs, how cities are laid out.

With the money we save by becoming almost local users travelling on public transport, we can invest it in experiences and other memories that will surely have much more value for us.

If we are looking for an even more epic adventure, we recommend setting off on an overnight train journey so that we can enjoy a comfortable bed while covering kilometre after kilometre. One less night of hotel accommodation translates into more budget to enjoy the city.

Working while we explore the world

If we dream of incredible and unique trips, money is surely our great obstacle. One possible way to mitigate such a problem somewhat would be to work (a little) during the holidays. Whether online, in our own occupation and continuing to be paid for it, or by taking one of those temporary “holiday jobs”.

Imagine spending the winter season teaching skiing on the snow-covered slopes of the Alps, serving travellers seeking the Mediterranean sun, or sharing our passion for languages by teaching classes in Thailand. Not bad, right? The possibilities are diverse. We only need a little ingenuity and an adventurous spirit.

A possible mission

Travelling around the world, if that is our dream and purpose, will logically require a considerable monetary investment, but with the advice given by our friends at Travelcover and which we have set out here for you, you can see that it is possible to explore the world without emptying the account. Travelling this way gives us a unique opportunity to rediscover ourselves and the world around us.

By living this adventure of travel minimalism, we realise that happiness does not lie in material possessions, but in the experiences and connections we create along the way. We learn to live with the essentials, appreciate simplicity and value the warmth of local hospitality.

With every step, we shed unnecessary baggage, not only physical but also emotional. We also discover that true freedom lies in lightness of spirit, in the ability to adapt and enjoy every moment with an open mind and a grateful heart.
