Spain to establish a major cyberdefence centre in Madrid
Madrid is set to become a key hub for Europe's digital defence with the creation of a large-scale cyber base.
A new Base Cibernética will be built in Madrid, a complex of around 100,000 square metres that will become a key hub for the country’s digital security. The project is overseen by Ministerio de Defensa de España, with the participation of NATO, and the base is scheduled to enter operation by the end of 2029.
The new centre will be located next to the current Retamares base, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, where Mando Conjunto del Ciberespacio and Escuela Militar de Ciberoperaciones already operate. The expansion will turn this area into the headquarters of Spanish cyber defence.
The base will include a 24-hour operational command centre, training and research areas, as well as a NATO Cyber Range training platform to simulate cyber operations. Specialists will be trained here, technologies will be tested, and the protection of military networks and data from attacks and digital espionage will be coordinated.
