Spain releases oil reserves to curb petrol prices
The Gobierno de España has decided to release part of its strategic oil reserves to curb the rise in petrol and diesel prices. The measure seeks to ease the pressure on prices at a time of sharp increases in fuel costs.
In an initial phase, 3.75 million barrels — equivalent to four days of national consumption — will be released, while another 8 million will be incorporated progressively as the market evolves. The aim is to stabilise prices and avoid further rises.
At present, fuel prices remain high: 95-octane petrol is around 1.74 euros per litre and diesel close to 1.86 euros. This rise affects both private drivers and professionals, with a direct impact on daily expenditure and on sectors that depend on transport.
Strategic reserves are an exceptional resource for guaranteeing supply in situations of international tension. Their release makes it possible to act quickly in uncertain scenarios and try to contain the escalation in prices.
For citizens, this decision may provide some relief if it translates into a reduction or stabilisation of prices at the pumps. It affects millions of people in their daily lives, from commuting to work to the cost of goods and services linked to transport. The key now is how the market will react in the coming days and whether this intervention will be enough to halt the upward trend in a still uncertain context.
