A national commission has been created in Spain to organise an extensive cultural programme to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Francisco de Goya in 2028.
The Spanish government has created a national commission to prepare for the bicentenary of the death of Francisco de Goya, which will be marked in 2028. The decision was approved at a meeting of the Consejo de Ministros at the initiative of the Ministerio de Cultura.
The new body will coordinate cultural, exhibition, and educational projects, bringing together the efforts of the State, autonomous communities, city councils, museums, and cultural centres. The authorities hope to create a unique programme dedicated to the artist’s legacy and his influence on world art.
The anniversary holds special significance for Aragón, Goya’s birthplace, which had previously called for more active State involvement in future commemorative events. The specific schedule of events has not yet been published, but key institutions, including the Museo del Prado, are expected to take part in the preparations.
