Europe takes flight: the end of charges for hand luggage is closer
Travelling light will no longer mean paying more. The European Parliament has approved a measure that could change the rules of air travel: EU airlines will be required to allow one item of hand luggage up to seven kilos free of charge, in addition to a small bag or backpack. A decision ending one of travellers’ most unpopular surcharges.
The goal is clear: to make flying an accessible right again, not a puzzle of fares. “This is a step towards a fairer and more transparent travel experience,” said Matteo Ricci, vice-president of the Comisión de Transportes y Turismo, who also pointed out that free hand luggage is a basic right that needed to be protected.
Although the airline industry, especially low-cost carriers, warns that base prices could rise to make up for lost revenue, the new regulatory framework includes further guarantees: children under 12 will be able to sit with their companions at no extra charge, and airlines will have to display the final flight price from the very first click.
The regulation still needs final approval, but the message is already out there: flying in Europe will be clearer, fairer, and less abusive.
