Catalunya already has its 2027 public holiday calendar: fewer long weekends and key dates for Barcelona

The new 2027 working calendar in Catalunya is already on the table and now sets the organisation of holidays, getaways and working days for those who live and work in Barcelona. The Generalitat has made the list of public holidays official, allowing companies and workers to anticipate their plans and adjust schedules months in advance. As every year, city councils may add up to two local public holidays, adapted to each municipality’s own traditions and celebrations.

The agreement between the Generalitat, unions such as CC.OO. and UGT, and employers’ organisations such as Foment del Treball and Pimec reinforces the validity of the calendar throughout Catalunya. This consensus makes it easier to apply the public holidays and reduces uncertainty in the planning of companies and families. However, in 2027 Barcelona will lose one of its most anticipated long weekends: 1 May, Workers’ Day, falls on a Saturday and removes the possibility of a long weekend for many.

The year starts with the New Year public holiday on Friday 1 January, followed by Three Kings’ Day on Wednesday 6. Holy Week will arrive early, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on the 29th, two dates that usually send thousands of Barcelona residents off in search of getaways. The loss of the May long weekend will be especially noticeable in the city, where it is usually used for trips or extra rest.

In the second half of the year, the calendar highlights Thursday 24 June, Sant Joan, one of Barcelona’s most celebrated nights, which this year will allow a midweek break. The National Day of Catalunya, on 11 September, will fall on a Saturday, reducing long-weekend options. Tuesday 12 October, Spain’s National Day, will allow a weekday break. The final stretch of the year includes Monday 1 November (All Saints’ Day), Monday 6 December (Constitution Day) and Wednesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception). Christmas Day, 25 December, will also be Saturday, limiting the possibilities of extending the Christmas holidays.

The Catalan working calendar is an essential tool for urban life in Barcelona. Beyond marking days off, it influences mobility, commercial activity and the organisation of cultural events. Each year, the City Council’s choice of local public holidays responds to a balance between tradition and neighbourhood needs, adapting the calendar to the identity of each neighbourhood and the city’s customs.
