FGC advertises 42 train-driver posts for the airport line

The recruitment call will be made through FGC Mobilitat and seeks to strengthen the team that will operate a connection long awaited by thousands of travellers. The line will link central Barcelona with the airport’s two terminals in just over 20 minutes, an improvement that could change the way people get to El Prat without relying on the car, taxi or slower combinations.

The new service will run every 15 minutes. That means that, if the timetable is met, the airport will be regularly connected with key stations in the city and metropolitan area, making both tourist journeys and workers’ commutes easier.

The R-Aeroport line will have 22.7 kilometres and nine stations: Sant Andreu, Sagrera, El Clot, Passeig de Gràcia, Sants, Bellvitge, El Prat, Aeroport T-2 and Aeroport T-1. The expected time between Passeig de Gràcia and Terminal 1 will be just over 20 minutes.

To apply for one of the posts, applicants will need to hold a valid train driver’s licence and diploma or a category B railway driving certificate. They will also have to demonstrate Baccalaureate or technical Vocational Training qualifications.

The recruitment call also opens the door to people admitted to the train driver examination of the State Railway Safety Agency. In that case, they must undertake to obtain the licence and diploma by the end of the selection process.

FGC will reserve at least 40% of the posts for women, a measure intended to advance female representation within a professional field that has historically been heavily male-dominated. The arrival of new women train drivers will be one of the visible parts of bringing the service into operation.

FGC president Carles Ruiz has also highlighted an employment advantage of the new line: workers will be able to finish their working day in the same locality where they start it. In a sector with demanding shifts and changing schedules, that detail can make a difference to daily organisation.

While staff selection progresses, the manufacture of the ten trains that will provide the service continues, handled by Alstom. The arrival of this rolling stock will be another necessary step before the line can operate normally.

The rail connection with the airport is one of the most anticipated elements of metropolitan mobility. Barcelona has long had an awkward relationship with El Prat: it is close, but getting there quickly, comfortably and directly is not always easy, especially for those travelling with luggage or relying on tight schedules.

If the R-Aeroport meets its deadlines, 2027 could mark an important change for passengers, airport workers and residents of the metropolitan area. The call for train drivers is not merely a job offer: it is a sign that the new connection is beginning to come closer to the real lives of those who travel between Barcelona and El Prat every day.
