FGC will renew lifts and escalators at key stations in Barcelona
Getting around some of FGC's busiest stations will be different in the coming months. Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya has begun a plan to renew 10 lifts and 9 escalators at different points in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, an initiative seeking to improve accessibility and reduce day-to-day disruptions for thousands of travellers.
The works will be spread across 11 stations and an operations centre located in seven municipalities. The project includes the complete replacement of old lifts, the modernisation of adjoining spaces and the installation of new escalators with more efficient and safer systems.
The stations where lifts will be renewed include Les Planes and Avinguda Tibidabo in Barcelona, as well as Sabadell Rambla, Sant Cugat Centre, Molí Nou and the Rubí Operations Centre. At the same time, new escalators will be installed at places such as Plaça Catalunya, Terrassa Rambla, Rubí Centre, Magòria La Campana and Can Ros.
The investment exceeds four million euros. Of that amount, around 2.1 million will go towards the lifts and nearly 2.2 million towards the escalators. The planned timetable is lengthy: the work will take around 15 months, although FGC says the work will be organised to minimise the impact on normal services.
The renewal comes at a time when many metropolitan stations have accumulated intensive use and there is evident wear on some mechanical access facilities. For older people, users with reduced mobility or families with pushchairs, this type of improvement has a direct impact on the day-to-day experience of public transport.
FGC has become one of the best-regarded rail networks in the Barcelona metropolitan area for its frequency and reliability. In recent years, the company has accelerated investment in accessibility and modernisation, especially at stations that handle high passenger volumes and connections with other transport systems.
