Gaudí is revived in the hidden heart of Casa Batlló: the private courtyard comes back to life after more than a century

The inner façade and private courtyard of the Planta Noble, the former home of the Batlló family, have been completely restored, revealing Antoni Gaudí’s original vision with striking fidelity.

Beneath layers of paint and decades of interventions, experts found the authentic colours of the stucco — dark and restrained — and the pure white of the wrought-iron railings. That discovery changed the project’s direction: the task was to erase the marks of time and return the space to its original soul. Gaudí’s hidden garden, conceived as a family oasis, has thus recovered its lost harmony.

The restoration, with an investment of €3.5 million and a team of local craftspeople, has not only returned missing elements — such as the central heather pergola and the planters — but has also recreated the Nolla mosaic paving with 85,000 hand-assembled pieces, recovering forgotten textures, colours and techniques.

What seemed a technical project became an archaeological journey. “It was like revealing a photographic negative,” says architect Xavier Villanueva. Gaudí, once again, surprises through the silence of materials.
