Granollers turns the Congost river into a major green lung against climate change
The Connecta Congost Natura 2025 project transforms 66,800 m² of the river into a green corridor with trees, meadows, and pedestrian areas that revitalise Granollers
Granollers has inaugurated the renaturalisation of the Congost River, a project that recovers 66,800 square metres of natural space in the urban heart and redefines residents' relationship with their surroundings. The intervention, recognised by the Ministry for Ecological Transition as one of the country's most innovative, forms part of the Connecta Congost Natura 2025 plan, funded by European Next Generation funds.
The former riverbed, previously constrained by concrete structures, has been transformed into a resilient green corridor, with 450 new trees, 15,800 m² of meadows and permeable ground capable of absorbing up to 100 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The former Passeig Fluvial, previously asphalted, has become a decomposed-granite path for pedestrians and cyclists, improving sustainable mobility and environmental quality.
The project has also worked in nearby neighbourhoods such as Primer de Maig, Instituts and Tres Torres, expanding green areas and consolidating Plaça de les Hortes as a connection point between the river, the Parc Fluvial and the neighbourhoods. In 2026, a new pedestrian footbridge towards the Conca del Besòs will be added, further expanding the network of urban natural spaces.
