Strikes at El Prat threaten mobility in Barcelona during Easter Week
Barcelona-El Prat Airport faces several days of strikes at ground-handling companies during Easter Week, one of the year's busiest times. Work stoppages by Groundforce and Menzies could cause delays at key times and affect thousands of travellers.
From the end of March until 6 April, more than 11,000 flights are scheduled at the airport. In parallel, Groundforce workers are maintaining indefinite stoppages three days a week during Easter Week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday — at especially sensitive times: early morning, midday and night. Added to this situation is the strike at Menzies Aviation, called on several specific dates between 28 March and 6 April. The UGT union reports organisational problems that could directly affect the airport’s daily operations.
Despite this, Aena says that the impact will be limited and that the schedule remains similar to last year’s. Even so, the context creates uncertainty, especially on days with the highest volume of operations. The peak of activity is expected around 5 April, when air traffic will reach one of its highest levels. On these dates, Barcelona airport ranks among the country’s busiest, behind only Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas.
Beyond the data, the situation once again highlights how sensitive mobility is at times of high demand. In a city such as Barcelona, where the airport forms part of the everyday rhythm — from getaways to tourism and business travel — any disruption to its operation directly affects the experience of those travelling and the economic activity that depends on it.
