Iberia imposes a surcharge of up to €140 for unusual luggage

Travelling from Barcelona with unconventional luggage can be costly. Iberia is introducing a new surcharge for items that do not fit the standard format. The measure is already generating debate and legal questions.

Those flying from El Prat or any airport with Iberia should check their luggage carefully: the airline has begun charging a special supplement to passengers checking in suitcases or items that do not fit the traditional shape. The new surcharge, which can reach €140, applies to any object which, because of its shape, material or size, could hinder the operation of airports' automated systems.

The format is now checked in a specific area of the check-in desk, where payment is also handled if the luggage is deemed “irregular”. This new development has surprised many travellers, especially those carrying musical instruments, sports equipment or unusual packaging.

The Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios has asked the Government to clarify whether this charge complies with current regulations. The debate is intensifying between those who see the measure as another barrier to travel and those who believe it responds to airlines' logistical needs.
