Rodalies reopens the Vallbona section, but problems continue

For many travellers, the main change has been the end of the compulsory transfers that complicated journeys over recent days. However, the return has not been without difficulties, and several users say that the first day of operation has again brought delays and uncertainty.

Among the most repeated complaints are trains stopped for more than half an hour at Sant Andreu station without clear explanations, as well as the scant information provided when incidents occur. The lack of real-time notices is once again among the aspects most criticised by those who use Rodalies every day to go to work or study.

Other passengers, by contrast, have noticed an improvement compared with the days of interruption. The restoration of normal frequencies between Sant Andreu Comtal and Montcada i Reixac has eased pressure on one of the metropolitan area’s most used rail connections.

The reopening restores normality to the R2, R2 Nord and R11 lines, in both Rodalies and medium-distance services. Even so, traffic continues to be subject to speed restrictions while safety is ensured in the area where the sinkhole appeared.

Every incident on this corridor has an immediate effect on metropolitan mobility. Thousands of people depend on these lines to connect Barcelona with municipalities in the Vallès and other counties, so any disruption ends up affecting work schedules, classes and connections with other means of transport.

The episode once again highlights one of the Catalan rail network’s main challenges: providing a reliable service and maintaining agile communication when problems arise. The day leaves trains running again, but also the feeling among many travellers that restoring confidence will take considerably longer than restoring the tracks.
