Van illegally transporting 15 puppies from Slovakia intercepted in Girona

The check took place during a routine inspection, in which officers detected irregularities both in the transportation of the animals and in the documentation presented by the driver.

According to police sources, the puppies were travelling with papers containing the details of a zoo that had already ceased operating. The use of this documentation raised immediate suspicions, as it did not correspond to the reality of the transfer or the animals’ origin.

After confirming that the documents were false, officers arrested the driver of the vehicle as the alleged perpetrator of an offence of document forgery. The puppies were placed in the custody of the competent authorities to ensure their welfare and assess their health.

The operation forms part of control measures carried out periodically to combat illegal animal trafficking, a practice that, in addition to breaching health and animal welfare regulations, is often linked to clandestine sales networks. Investigations remain open to determine the puppies’ final destination and whether more people were involved in the transfer.
