Katy Perry fined for filming in a protected paradise in Formentera
Katy Perry is making headlines again, this time over a controversy that has nothing to do with music or rumours.
The artist has paid a €6,001 fine for filming part of her Lifetimes music video without authorisation on s’Espalmador, an islet of high ecological value within the Parque Natural de ses Salines, in Formentera.
The Conselleria de Agricultura, Pesca y Medio Natural confirmed that the production company WeOwnTheCity, responsible for the shoot, did not request the required permit. The offence has been classified as "serious," though without aggravating factors, as no environmental damage was detected after filming.
The shoot, in July 2024, included scenes of Perry dancing in urban areas, nightclubs, and natural landscapes. The footage that raised concerns shows her inside the protected dune system, which is marked off by ropes and prohibition signs.
The dunes of s’Espalmador and the beach of Ses Illetes, protected since 1980, form one of the best-preserved ecosystems in the Balearic Islands and are home to unique biodiversity. The penalty serves as a reminder that not even global stardom exempts anyone from respecting the rules that protect these environments.
