Barceloneta accelerates its transformation with more than €46 million in works
Barceloneta is undergoing one of its biggest urban renewals in recent years. Around 70% of the investment plan planned for the neighbourhood has already been completed or is under way, with more than €46 million allocated to schools, health centres, housing, squares, mobility and neighbourhood facilities.
One of the most advanced changes is at the Escola Bressol Municipal La Mar. Its extension will allow it to increase from 63 to 100 places and add new rooms, a lift and an external staircase. The wooden structure, made beforehand in a workshop and then assembled at the centre itself, has already been completed and has made it possible to reduce some of the disruption caused by the works.
Schools are also being adapted to the heat. Escola Mediterrània already has efficient climate control and solar panels, while Escola Alexandre Galí will be next. For families, the change means classrooms better prepared to face increasingly long summers and high temperatures during the school year.
The map of new facilities extends across the neighbourhood. The former Cooperativa Segle XX will be transformed into a youth and community space of 682 square metres, with an investment of 3.7 million euros and opening planned for the start of 2027. Another 636-square-metre premises at Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 44, will be set aside for organisations and should come into operation during the first half of that same year.
Healthcare provision will also grow. The purchase of the former Clínica Barceloneta will make it possible to develop a new primary healthcare centre of almost 3,000 square metres. Until that permanent facility arrives, the temporary extension of the current primary healthcare centre is already operational to increase its capacity.
In the street, one of the works with the greatest impact will be the remodelling of Plaça del Poeta Boscà. More than 4,300 square metres opposite the market will change with new accessible children’s play areas, shade zones, street furniture and a water space designed to relieve the summer heat. Planned investment amounts to 1.2 million euros.
This will be joined by the refurbishment of Carrer de Pepe Rubianes, funded with 5 million, along with measures to remove architectural barriers and renew pavements and signage. The new cycle lane on Passeig de Joan de Borbó already connects to Via Laietana, while projects such as a skate plaza at Doctor Aiguader, improvements to sports facilities and the renovation of other neighbourhood squares advance.
Housing completes this transformation. Municipal buildings have already been refurbished and 13 affordable-rental flats at Joan de Borbó, 44, have been allocated, as well as five homes assigned to social organisations. Modernisation also continues for 81 flats for older people on Carrer de Pinzón. The effect is felt in a neighbourhood where works are not concentrated in a single large intervention: schools, squares, health centres and homes are all changing at once the daily route between the market, the beach and the inner streets of la Barceloneta.
