La Boqueria falls to 11 million visitors between January and June

The fall extends the trend recorded during 2025, when annual footfall dropped by 10%. The market then went from 25 million users in 2024 to 22.5 million, a reduction linked mainly to the works on La Rambla and the lower arrival of international tourists.

The redevelopment works have made access to and movement around the area difficult for months. Although the works are entering their final stretch, their effects are still visible in a market that depends largely on the daily movement of residents, workers and visitors.

May was the busiest month of the half-year, with almost two million entries. However, this one-off upturn has not been enough to make up for the overall loss of visitors recorded since the start of the year.

Since the end of 2025, the Boqueria Digital project has made it possible to measure footfall more precisely through 78 sensors installed at different points in the venue. The system not only counts entries, but also identifies the corridors, times and areas where activity is most concentrated.

The market's management will use these data to reorganise circulation, strengthen security and prevent crowding at the busiest points. The information may also help improve coexistence between regular customers, traders and tourist groups.

The company responsible for the technology is considering extending this model to other markets and public spaces in Barcelona. The aim is to better understand changes in consumer habits and adapt municipal management to new mobility flows.

The evolution of footfall over the coming months will be key to seeing whether the end of the works brings back some of the lost public. For traders, recovering easy access from La Rambla may make a difference to sales and to the market's daily rhythm.
