La Boqueria reinvents itself: complete renovation to restore its essence as a citizens' market

Barcelona has reached broad agreement to return La Boqueria to its identity as a traditional market.

The city council and market traders have agreed on a comprehensive remodelling that will limit the presence of stalls aimed at tourism and ensure that at least 50% of the offering consists of fresh, locally sourced products: fishmongers, butchers, bakeries and food establishments linked to local gastronomy.

The agreement, backed by more than 90% of members, provides for a first phase of works during this term of office: opening a new entrance from Plaça de la Gardunya, reorganising the stalls and rebuilding the central fish section, now obsolete. This work will be coordinated with the renovation of the Rambla for completion in 2027.

In a second stage, during the next term of office, the fibrocement roof will be replaced, solar panels installed, and accessibility and climate-control improvements addressed. The initial investment is estimated at 12 million euros.

‘The challenge is for the Boqueria to remain an icon, without losing its soul as a market for citizens,’ stressed deputy mayor Raquel Gil. With this commitment, the city seeks to balance tourist appeal and everyday life, ensuring that the heart of the Rambla continues to beat to the rhythm of its residents.
