Alcalá Street will have a new pedestrian boulevard between Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá
Madrid will soon undertake a redevelopment that will change the appearance of one of its best-known thoroughfares: Alcalá Street will gain a pedestrian boulevard connecting Cibeles square with Puerta de Alcalá.
The plan, which will be approved in the coming days, is included in the renewal project for the Paisaje de la Luz, the site declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2021. The initiative will reduce lanes for cars, add a planted central reservation 7.5 metres wide and give more space to public transport and bicycles.
The works will be carried out in phases, starting with the northern and southern sides, while the intervention on the Paseo del Prado will be developed later under the heritage-protection criteria set by UNESCO. As well as improving mobility and environmental quality, the new design will recover the historical memory of this route, which in the past had a tree-lined boulevard that has now disappeared.
With this transformation, the City Council seeks to reinforce the cultural and landscape value of the area while promoting a more sustainable urban model designed for pedestrians.
